After the Christmas fair in Poggibonsi, Siena, the artisan will be in two nice medioeval Tuscan towns: Tavarnelle (FIorence) and Lucignano (Arezzo).
On Sunday, December the 11th, the artisan will be at the Christmas artisanal market in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, which is a nice medioeval city between Siena and Florence. The same day the event called “Rally della fettunta” (the bread fille with olive oil race) is going taking place. Real rally cars will challenge each others running along the white roads of the cities of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Barberino Val d’Elsa, San Casciano Val di Pesa and Castellina in Chianti. There will be also plenty of activities for families and children.
Tavarnelle Val di Pesa was a restore place for pilgrims who were travelling along the Francigena road, from France to Rome. In fact according to the Catasto (building State archive), there was a Inn called Red Lion since the 1427.
The town is located in Chianti area, and is also popular for local production of wine (expecially red wine) and oil.
On Sunday, december the 18th, Genio Italiano will take part, as every year, in the Christmas fair called “Fiera del Ceppo”, that is “the big lof fair” in Lucignano (Arezzo). Artisan is going to show their products along the town ring shaped medioeval street, and visitors will have the chance to warm themselves up to the log fires lighted up here and there.
According to the local peasant tradition, families used to light up a big wooden log at Christmas night, to make themselves warm while they were waiting for the “old man” (that used to be Santa Claus local name) to throw down from the chimney right under the ashes some fruits a sweeties. Children used to be amazed by this magic usually performed by their grandfather, or the oldest man in the family, that was also called the “Capoccia”, that is, “the Cheaf”.
Christmas fairs are great occasions to find the perfect gift for people who really meant to us: artisanal item are usually unique pieces, a kind of a special memory that will be treasured by our dears.
Genio Italiano also took place, on the last Sunday of November, at the artisanal fair in Poggibonsi. You can see below some photos of the street stall.
